Im considering using grass clippings as bedding for my chickens. Since rain isnt a big issue and Id clean it out regularly, would this work? In the winter, I plan to switch to hay, but Im wondering if grass clippings are a safe and cost-effective option. Has anyone tried this?

I've used grass clippings in the past, but they tend to form a dense, compact layer, making it hard for droppings to dry. Mixing them with straw or dry leaves helps with aeration. Also, avoid clippings from treated lawns, as chemicals could harm your flock.

Grass clippings are an easy and free option, but they don't absorb moisture well. You might need to change them out more frequently than traditional bedding. If you have a dry, well-ventilated coop, it could work, but I'd suggest using them as an addition rather than the sole bedding material.

Grass clippings are fine short-term, but they decompose quickly. Consider mixing with straw or wood shavings to improve airflow.

Fresh, dry grass clippings can work, but they mat down fast. Make sure they're fully dry to avoid mold and bad odors.

Works if dry, but be cautious, wet grass can grow bacteria fast. A mix with straw or pine shavings might be a better option.

If you use them, make sure they're pesticide-free. Wet clippings can create ammonia buildup, so keep an eye on moisture levels.
